As this story unravels, the reader is able to observe the changing of a relationship, tradition, and young man. While reading, each character appears equally content, yet neither is truly pleased. The root of the unhappiness in each character is due to the change that has occurred in Joe and in their tradition. While his father accepts his change of mind, he is quite obviously offended and most likely feels hurt by Joe’s decision. On the other hand, Joe expresses sorrowfulness. This leaves the reader’s mind focused on the past, when the relationship was ideal and each character was happy; reminiscing in the…

Sherman Alexie applies hyperbole strategy. “Our house was filled with books. They were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedrooms, and living room.” Using his exaggerated speech it shows the reader how much Alexie read growing up. The stacked up books all over the house shows what a tremendous role books had on his life. “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food.” For Alexie growing up was not easy living on a reservation and desperately wanted to escape. This hyperbole emphasizes how hard life is for most Indian children, ultimately wanting all children to leave the reservation and not be a stereotypical Indian.…

In the beginning they had no hope and the future seemed grim for them. At that point nothing seemed possible. However as time progressed they overcame the obstacles presented in their way. Jefferson changed the people’s opinion of being inferior, Grant overcame his pessimistic outlook of the children, and as a group they showed the white community that there is more than what meets the eye. By overcoming these obstacles, the minority in Bayonne can have hope that the future will be different. The pigment of their skin should not determine the type of treatment they deserve and more importantly the lifestyle they live. By the end of the novel, members of the minority began to have a positive expectation for the life they will live. It is hope that pushes and motivates one to keep going despite less than ideal…

Hope starts with believing in something one desires can happen. Sparks of hope are revealed throughout this story through the character Jebro. Jebro’s hope comes from believing that he can continue on the traditions of his native culture, so that the traditions will not be lost. He believes he can do this by teaching important Marshallese traditions to younger Marshallese, and Americans who take an interest in learning. “Maybe on one of your days off I can swing by with a boat and we’ll go fish. The rules say we’re not supposed to stop over here, but I’m sure we’ll get away with it. You can show me how you knew where that school was gonna come up. Or did you use that magic finger of yours? Jebro nodded, smiling now. Okay we go fishing sometime, but if you want my secrets that are worth more than any boat you give me! He laughed “(Barclay 253). I think this passage in the story shows that Jebro is realizing that not all Americans like Travis, are bad people. This gives him hope that he can begin to teach Americans about what is important to the Marshallese natives, so they can come…

While others grew fond of the land, and just couldn't give it up because there was too much sweat equity given to the hopes that the land would give them a second shot at success. As you read further into the Promise, and even further beyond that, you can you that Egan is trying to give the whole story of the great dustbowl. Where, you have the cause, the event, why the majority of people left, the living conditions of the people who stayed, and most importantly he answers why they stayed. The reason Egan believes the heart of the story lies on the question of why some people stayed is because he was able to talk to these people, get to know them, and hear their untold stories. He believed these people had the strongest will, to face such a challenge, and wanted to share this knowledge, unknown to most people, forgotten, and give better insight on what life in the dustbowl truly was…

The word I choose to study for the word study exercise is hope. I selected this word because the past few weeks have been filled with various hate crimes and during a back to school rally held by our church individuals wanted to know if there were any hope of things getting better. God lead me to the book of Lamentations where Jeremiah wept for the destruction of Jerusalem due to the sins of the people. In the midst of Jeremiah’s tears he found hope in knowing that even though God promised destruction he also promised deliverance for his children. As believers we must have hope in God, knowing no matter how bad the situation maybe, God still assures us of his unfailing love for us.…
