Since my sophomore year in high school, I have always wanted to join a fraternity. First, I think it is a great experience for students to witness the greek culture as they attend college. In addition, the shows, parties, and other activities really excite me. Finally, not only does all the fun excite me, but a fraternity is also a brotherhood. Therefore, I think it is a great idea to join a fraternity.…
“Tell your squires to mix some more wine so that we can make a fresh libation, to Zeus the Thunderer, patron of suppliants, who deserve respect. And let the housekeeper give him (Odysseus) a meal from all she has available.” Here we see authentic hospitality and civilized behaviour towards a stranger they have just met. They are showing respect to the Gods by preparing a fresh libation for them to wish for goodness and hope for this weary traveller. They show that the Gods are a very important part of their lifestyle and that they do not think that they are better than the Gods in any way. “I wish- by Zeus, and Athene and Poseidon….” These people are believers of the Gods and wish for nothing more than to serve and please…
Hospitality is one of the most important themes in Homer’s The Odyssey, and the Phaeacians seem to be among the more hospitable people that Odysseus meets. Among the other people that Odysseus encounters are Aeolus, Polyphemus, Eumaeus, and the suitors. Most of the people he meets are generally pretty hospitable, due to the fear of Zeus punishing them.…
Have you ever had a remarkably good host? Can you recall what about the host made him or her great? Rather, have you ever had a very bad host? What was wrong with the host, so that you would remember how bad he or she was? In The Odyssey by Homer, hosts are also quite important, debatably more important than they are today. Back in the days of ancient Greece, hosts were expected to be helpful and hospitable and they were expected to serve their guests well, with generosity.…

I took a trip to Greek town Casino in Detroit Michigan with my father, this trip was something of an unexpected trip but I figured it was a great place to observe the behaviors of many different cultures as Greek town casino is the home of a multicultural society. I wanted to observe the behaviors of those between African American’s and Caucasian persons. I wanted to see if one race over the other tended to gamble more or if one culture got more aggressive as the night went on.…

Telemakhos gives a warm greeting to Athena when she walks into his house and says “Greetings stranger! Welcome to our feast[…] A maid/ brought them a silver finger bowl and filled it/ out of a beautiful spouting golden jug” (1.154-171). When Athena came into their house they immediately welcomed her and brought out their nicest jugs and bowls. Telemakhos does this to make her feel welcomed. In this quotes you can see that good hospitality shows loyalty towards others. When Athena walked in to Telemakhos’s house he automatically cared towards her and made her feel at home, this was one of the many examples of good hospitality in The Odyssey.…
it’s shown that people may have offered hospitality initially, in fear/honor of Zeus or just in pure kindness. You can see this in action when Odysseus visits Phaeacia, ( Books 6 and 8 pages 73- 89), when Odysseus is stuck in Polyphemus’ cave (Book 9 pages 95-107), and finally when Odysseus gets home and encounters the Suitors. (Books 17- 22 pages 174-230). Today in our American culture, few people offer hospitality probably because there’s no one forcing them to, people offer hospitality today because it’s out of their selfless, kind heart.…
The Golden Age is considered the pinnacle of Greece as a nation and a society. It was the highest point of wealth and prosperity in Greeces history and therefore the happiest of times. This period was also the peak of Grecian art, writings, sculpture, theatre, and architecture. The Golden Age is credited with forming the modern day stereotype of what Grecian life was like. The Greeks greatly influenced modern day culture through the establishment of a standard of living for society. The Greeks further established a model government that, despite many wars, functioned fairly well without dispute from the people.…
Greece was the birthplace of Western Civilization because its culture became the embodiment for the other western civilizations. The tale of the ancient Greek civilization showed an immense painful history of foreign supremacy. But their civilization was built on solid foundation and led by powerful leaders that created values, norms and customs that are still being practiced and observed by many modern societies. This is the reason why the Greek civilization continued to flourish, remembered, celebrated throughout the entire world. One of the factors that can be considered as an important part of the Greek civilization development is the geography. The geography of Greece had a very overwhelming impact on every aspect like its political, cultural,…
When a person enters someone’s home they see how the host reacts too see if the person is welcoming or not.
