A teacher found two girls smoking in the bathroom in a school located in New Jersey. Upon arrival to the principal’s office for disciplinary actions, one of the girls admitted to smoking, while the other (whose initials are T.L.O.) denied any wrongdoing. She eventually admitted to using this paraphernalia for selling marijuana in school. Using the evidence found within the purse and the confession, she was charged and taken into juvenile court where she was eventually sentenced to a year’s probation. T.L.O argued that her 4th amendment rights had been violated…
Most people do not enjoy work, so by the time they get in the car, they’re exhausted, grouchy, and can’t take one more ounce of Debbie-downer news. The current events covered are mostly sad stories that don’t directly affect the lives of the listener. The hosts will announce topics such as “the poor and hungry population has gone up two percent in Indonesia” (Awkwardly cuts to music). Hmm, Okay? Granted, these are issues that need attention, but this radio station has just mentioned the issue, that’s it; nothing was said on how to fix these matters. If they won’t provide any possible solutions, why bring up the problem in the first place? Contrary to the Spirit FM, the DJs from the Joy FM talk about any personal struggles that they come across in their daily lives, which they think might relate to the majority of their listeners. The hosts on 91.5 will mention a situation and make an open discussion by opening the phone lines to the listeners. Once they get a caller, the DJs will talk about the situation and how they reacted after considering the circumstances; once they finish, the caller would talk about a similar instance and how he or she handled it. Towards the end of the discussion, they compare to compose the best possible way to handle the predicament once it comes up again. Listening in on a conversation about relevant events in our lives makes a substantial…
For the y2k generation, Hip-Hop Music has been the center of popularity and interest. In the late 1800’s Minstrel shows served the same purpose. Throughout the various generations music and theatre have had a large impact throughout the community. However this impact is not always positive. What was originated as positive became negative very quickly. The minstrel show, which was originally intended to be harmless entertainment for the masses, came to be viewed as a form of propaganda that degraded and dehumanized African Americans; similarly, today’s hip-hop serves the same purpose by glorifying bigotry and degradation.…
Dr. Boyce Watkins debates with Michael Eric Dyson on whether or not hip hop artists should be held accountable for their words. Both off these men already know, all of the artist should be held accountable, however if we can put the artist to task to stop making that kind of idiotic music, will we have the power to stop that machine that has rob us blind but still put out recording artists slaves that get plenty but they are selfish and it good and bad to an extent? Dr. Watkins points out, that the fact of us and others being bombarded with these negative images of the young Black Male in the mass media, appears to be taking a heavy toll in terms of the self-image of far too many young Black people and in the way these young people are perceived in the minds of the…

By the mid-1950’s, stations focused less on entertainment programs such as soap-operas, detective stories, and comedy shows, and more on music, talk, and news. Radio began giving increased attention to music and the recording industry. Soon, local stations were adopting different formats, which were now ruled by the “clock hour” and developing their own personalities. By the mid 60’s over a dozen music formats of all kinds had been implemented, such as the Top 40. The Top 40 became increasingly popular and young listeners were spending more and more money on music that was being played by their local disc jockey (DJ). Record companies began to depend on DJ’s to play their music as advertisement for artists and new albums. Some companies were even accused of bribing DJ’s to play their music in a controversy referred to as the “Payola”…

“I answered the phones, talked to customers, typed and handled the paperwork. The fellas I worked with used to say, ‘I don’t know how you do so much!’ There’s no trick! You just get on with it. You keep busy and get through it eventually. It helps if you like the work, and I did really like working at Davey. Really, I liked it all! I liked the people I worked with. I liked talking to the clients. And I learned a lot more about trees. Way back when, when I just got out of school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. My dad said I could work in an office or be a window dresser, who decorates shop windows. I wonder what my life…
REAGAN: This bill demonstrates for all time our nation's ironclad commitment to Social Security. It assures the elderly that America will always keep the promises made in troubled times a half a century ago. It assures those who are still working that they, too, have a pact with the future. From this day forward, they have one pledge that they will get their fair share of benefits when they retire.…
To understand more fully the media’s role in shaping the culture of African-American experience, one must first examine the stereotypes projected by popular culture, such as MTV, BET, and VH1. The songs and music videos created by such hip-hop artists as 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg have built a culture centered in misogyny and violence. The value of a man in music videos is determined by his ability to…
THE SEEK BUTTON on the Ford’s radio is working. The downtown recedes. Miles of neighborhoods fill the windshield. The SEEK function locks on someplace in stereo, college FM probably. “Yeah,” a new friend says, “Whas up. Whas goin on.” The radio has another button, VOL, which gets jacked repeatedly while the Ford hurtles, happily, to the source of the noise. Not to the station’s broadcast booth on a campus across the river, nor to its transmission towers in the suburbs, but rather to RJam Productions in North Dorchester, where black kids from Boston’s now-integrated high schools-Latin, Madison Park, Jeremiah Burke, Mattapan-cut demos and dream of being bigger than even the radio’s new friend, a young man named Schoolly D who right now, at speaker-damaging volume, sounds darn big. “Before we start this next record…,” Schooly’s saying. The record in question is called “Signifying Rapper,” a brief, bloody tale of ghetto retribution from Side 2 of Schoolly’s Smoke Some Kill.…
