They say that it is full of hills however in the movie, the scene shows the Mire wooded with trees (Attwood David). This makes the mire more dark and scary in the movie. Another part is when Holmes and Watson were running from the hound. In the book it says, “heavy silence of the windless night” (Doyle, Conan p 188) however, in the movie it shows a cloudy day, not night. This makes it much more scarier in the book. One similarity is when Watson found Holmes in the same location in both of the two. In the book, it is described as a hut, “old stone huts” (Doyle, Conan p 174) and in the movie, the scene showed a stone hut (Attwood David) meaning this part is big. Therefore, changing the setting could impact the stories mood a lot. Plot. The plot is the main part in this story and it drives the story forward. Changing it has drastic impacts on generalizations. First of all, one difference is when they found out that the convict died, not Sir Henry. In the book, its says “beard, the man has a beard!” (Doyle, Conan p 191). On the other hand, in the movie they found out because he had a tattoo. This can change the inference because these details could provide evidence which affects the audience. One that was the same was the big plan for Sir Henry. On page 207 of the book it states the entire plan and how it's going to go. He says, “drive to Merripit House...tell him you are walking alone...go into the night.” (Doyle, Conan p 207). In the movie, he says practically the exact same words just it doesn’t go as planned because the book says, “Homes breathed a prayer when he saw… no sign of injury.” Yet, in the movie, the scene shows Sir Henry bit in the neck and bleeding out (Attwood David). This makes the people know that the climax is coming and puts a foreshadow on it. Therefore, the plot impacts the overall generalizations that people make. Characters.
The characters drive the conflict and have many personalities and looks. These traits can impact inferences and generalizations a lot. For example, in the book and the movie, Stapleton has a different appearance. In the book it states “carried a green-butterfly net” (Doyle, Conan p 92) while in the movie he has a shovel (Atwood David). This makes readers think that he is more harmful with a shovel. However, Stapleton is still mean in both and them and abuses his wife (Atwood David) (Doyle, Conan p 224-225). Another thing that’s the same is Sir Henry’s personality. He is willing to do anything in order to catch the killer. In the book and the movie, during the plan, he listens and does everything they say. (Doyle, Conan p 207) (Attwood David). Therefore, when changing the character’s personality/look it can make people think different ideas. Many things happen that change the stories overtime. However, changing a part could affect the entire story. Therefore, by changing the characters, setting, and the plot, the same literature can be different in various forms of entertainment from a movie to a
book.
