Symbolic interactionism is a term coined by Hubert Blummer, but is credited to the teachings of George Herbert Mead. The definition basically means that people will decide how to act based on the meaning, or the way they see someone or something. This meaning the effects of the interaction is essentially based on experience which causes preconceived notions to become part of the communication process. In the clip, a boy already decided who his father was based on his own experience of taking care of him that he could would not accept what happened even though he was there. The meanings of people, objects, and ideas are based on the interactions with other people and creates experiences.

The clip titled Meaning is about a son who will not accept that his father chose to commit suicide. The father had brain cancer and was unable to communicate or take care of himself for years. This would normally be a sign or symbol for giving up on life, and this would make sense due to his condition. After House made the statement that the father was a “drool”, it would not make sense that he would attempt to kill himself. The meaning provided by history and other instances attached to suicide was hopelessness, but House’s wisdom changes that meaning for the symbol of suicide at least for the father’s case. He was letting the family know he was not giving up of life. What can also be gathered from the interaction, is that the father realized how his family saw him. His “me” was understood to be a helpless trapped soul and his “I” was fighting to break
