Contrary to what most people think, athletics shifts the focus away from learning. Sports require and focus on a lot, such as dedication, practice, critical thinking, time, effort, confidence/responsibility, and commitment to a goal. When practicing for a sport athletes should mentally be ready to train, listen to their coach's instructions and apply them instead of just going through the motions. Effort is a big part of dedication which determines how hard athletics work, Hard work intends to push athletics past their current limits, which pressures motivation. They do not care about what's happening around them, and they aren't easily distracted, They are focused on what they are doing, This feeling is called being "on" or "in the zone". Concentration is one of the most important mental skills in sports. Athletes who have a hard time focusing, are easily distracted by doubts, negative thoughts, mistakes or other factors like parents and coaches yelling during a game. Improved grade point averages and a higher likelihood of going to college are obvious positives in a youth’s education that can be an outcome of them playing a sport, but having a higher connection to school. By forcing athletes to focus mainly on sports, including to train to better a skill, shifts the attention away from education, causing students to become unprepared for a better education, such as college, or even life. For many high school athletes, the only reason they even stay in school is because of sports. This is not ideal, but it is still significant according to Landers (1978) because they might acquire additional skills and knowledge that may increase their chances of graduating, thereby enhancing their education and occupational mobility”. “To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society” (David Petina 7).
