How Can A Standardized Test Follow All The Principles Of Universal Design?
1. Can a standardized test follow all the principles of universal design? What about a classroom assessment? Since standardized test are mandated to include all populations nationwide, they should and can follow all the principles of universal design. However, even though standardized tests can follow universal design, they are not as flexible or meaningful for all students. Classroom assessment can also follow the principles of universal design and can be more adaptable to the individual students that make up the classroom. The application guidelines for universal test design include equitable use (design is useful and appealing for all users), flexibility in use (accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities), simple and intuitive use (consistent and easy to understand), perceptible information (communicates necessary information using different modes), tolerance for error (minimizes hazards and provides warnings), low physical effort (neutral body position and minimum fatigue), size and space for approach and use (provide adequate sight and position).

One would include accessible and nonbiased items that are free of stereotypes or offensive languages. The test should reflect words, phrases, graphics, and concepts that are consistent and commonly used across cultures and languages. It is important for the test to be amenable to accommodations and without time limits. The test should be simple with clear instructions and procedures, short sentences, and sample items. The format should have maximum legibility with high contrast, large font size, and white
