Safdarjung tomb is a garden tomb in a marble mausoleum which was built by Nawab Shuja-Ud Daulah, son of Mirza Muquim Abul Mansur khan entitled Safdarjung. It represents the last phase of mughal architecture. There are four water canals leading to several smaller Pavilions like Jangli Mahal or forest palace, Moti Mahal or pearl palace and Badshah Pasand or king’s favorite. The complex also has a madrasa. These pyramids took place in the Third Dynasty during 2630-2575 BC. King Djoser commissioned this monumental architecture in Egypt. The designer was Djoser’s prime minister, Ihotep, whose name is inscribed on a statue at the site. The purpose was to hold his mummified body. The Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser's at Saqqara arose as a traditional, flat-roofed mastaba, although in 2611 B.C., by the end of his nineteen-year reign, it had risen to six stepped layers and stood two hundred and four feet or sixty-two meters high, making it the largest building at this time. The Funerary Complex of Djoser is a large pyramid structure that looks like steps with six structures stacked on top of one another, each one decreasing in size. The material used was limestone. These pyramids were usually eighteen hundred feet long by nine hundred feet wide; overall in size they were very large. Below the structure was the underground burial area, which consisted of a small room that held a statue of the deceased and there was a chapel for family to gather. A shaft then led down to the burial area that was sealed after the burial. This structure was west facing towards the setting sun. Under…

The Taj Mahal is extremely well balanced in its design. Each side of the Taj Mahal is exactly the same giving it a symmetrical appearance. The focal point is the entire main structure that is immediately visible and almost framed by the gateway entrance. The large scale, equally proportioned project was completed over twenty-two years to resemble the love of his deceased wife. The visual rhythm can be identified in the repetitious use of over 25 different semi precious stones and calligraphy throughout the design. Unity is seen in its symmetry proportion and white marble, yet is not lost in the variety of lines that are present. The variety of color is present because of the reddish mosque on both sides the give the…

There are two slightly different theories on what the purpose was for such an elaborate burial place for emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. The first came from the well-known Chinese historian Sima Qian (145-90 BCE)(Sayre, 2012). He reports that the emperor started construction of his tomb as soon as he took the throne. Since he ruled for over 30 years gives one reason his burial place is so elaborate (Loewe, 2007). The second theory, from Prof. Steven J Ramold of Eastern Michigan University, states the Qin Tomb was created to make a statement in stone that a new China existed. This construction also provides a central reference point for Chinese history.…

The first example includes the imitation of overall plans as well as dimensions, documented so well by J. W. Graham 1, but it also includes the imitation of individual rooms and architectural details. Many of the imitated rooms appear to have been shrines. The current excavations at Mochlos, for example, have uncovered a building that served as the main ceremonial center for the LM IB settlement, Building B.2 2. The east wing of this building is built in ashlar masonry and contains two pillar crypts on the basement level, each provided with a window and each with a bench along its north wall. They belong to a well-known type of Minoan shrine complex consisting of a columnar room above a basement crypt 3. Evidence for their religious use was found in a number of ritual objects, which had fallen from the columnar rooms down into the crypts, and in the dozens of conical cups that had been used as lamps which were found outside the crypts, some sitting on a low precinct wall which runs alongside the crypts. One of the first examples of this type…

The Great Wall is one of the most spectacular engineering feats ever conceived: The Great Wall of China, which eventually spanned over 5500 miles, was constructed to seal the vast Chinese Empire from the outside world. Many peasant workers died constructing the wall and were buried in the wall, which coined the nickname ‘The Long Graveyard’. Mostly all of the Emperors that followed added on to the wall. Further, Shi Huangdi, engineered an opulent tomb that would be his final resting place atop a river of mercury. As discovered recently, Shi Huangdi had intricate sculptures made of his terracotta army to guard his tomb in the afterlife.…
