In history, African Americans have always been discriminated against. When Africans came to America, they were forced against their will to do all chores around plantations. They forced slaves to the wealthy, stingy, and uncaring Americans. Obviously as slaves they did not get any pay and they were beat on a daily basis. Africans ever since they were kidnapped to this country always fought for their freedom, all the way till the civil war came. When the Civil War started, they tried to join to free all slaves from the miserable lives they were living. The Civil War is a well-known war. If you ask its name to someone, they will let you know that they have heard of it before. They would let you know that it was between the rebels and the Union army. They would tell you names of soldiers and/or officers who were in it. But the thing about this is that they will not be able to say any African American soldiers’ names. Most people think that African Americans had not did anything in society especially in an American war. The fighting of the African Americans in the Union won the Civil War and they actually received no credit from that. Because most African Americans were slaves they did the things slaves were supposed to do on an everyday basis. Doing that so many years made them a lot more adapted to the landscape and when it came time, that knowledge became very important because they were so use to the terrain that when they went back to the south they were used to it and had no trouble with get around and hiding when needed. That helped a lot. When they went to battle, they had knowledge where to go also where and what time was right to travel, without being found. Colonel T.W. Higginson felt that African Americans were very important in achieving in the battle, the reason why was because they had a lot more to live for. That exact reason became a great tool to use and tactic. So with this all being said African Americans in the Civil War were much needed but many to them not wanted.
