to his roots, such as his familial and cultural roots to look at traditions and customs.
Experiences such as meeting with the Dalai Lama and learning about his grandmother and other family members and their contribution to their community in India help bring Eboo to that moment of clarity. In meeting with the Dalai Lama, Eboo says that the Dalai Lama spoke several times on the importance of coming together. This is just one example of pluralism that Eboo is exposed to. Another instance which helps Eboo come to that moment of clarity, realizing that he is part of the story of ubuntu, is when he is told about his family in India. He is told that his grandmother sheltered women for 40 years, paying for some of their education along the way. Eboo longed to be the caring person that his grandmother was, and she is part of the reason that Eboo feels he is a part of ubuntu. Between the two experiences, the visit to the Dalai Lama seemed more transformative. Just like Eboo, the Dalai Lama called for pluralism and equality.
The Qur’an allowed Eboo to understand the reasoning behind the actions of his grandmother, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Herschel.
“God entrusted humanity to be His representative here,” Eboo said. What Eboo means is that God wanted humans to represent himself, and to be good humanitarians like God was. Eboo also mentions that each human is awarded morality and virtue that not even angels are given. Humans such as Eboo’s grandmother were created for the greater good, to make a difference, and to represent God in his best form. Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Herschel were all historical figures that came from different religious backgrounds. Though these people had different religious views, they were all civil rights activists who sought for racial equality or pluralism.
The title of the book Acts of Faith means acts that assess the strength of a person’s beliefs. The subtitle, The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation, describes the fight for the spirituality and individuality of the generation. Eboo is talking about the lack of soul and spirit of the generation, and how that is a struggle for him. I think throughout the book Eboo is successful in convincing his generation to come together (pluralism) and find their inner self. As the youth, Eboo stresses the importance of interfaith collaboration especially with young people, and that is something that will carry on with me. Also, it opened up my eyes
to the idea of Religious Pluralism and how it is still a huge problem throughout the world.
