How Did Charles Dickens Influence The Christmas Carol
This essay is about an era named after Queen Victoria where people wanted an escape. This era was where family was very important. Art influenced people at this time. It was hard for children to survive. Children were either killed or dead of illness by the age of five.
Families were very practical and they encouraged hard work. The Victorians enjoyed activities such as visiting resorts, racing, and football. There were two kinds of social classes: upper and lower. upper class was quite wealthy. In fact, they had maids and labor was cheap for them. Lower class was very hard and people that were poor stayed struggling. They never really got help like they should. They didn’t have any appliances in their house with no running water and barely any food or money to live on. How much money you had and how you were in the social class affected where your kids went to school. If you were in poverty, your kids went to an out of date school; but if you were middle class your kids went to either boarding school or a school that was built inside of a church. At the upper class schools, kids would get to do things to be inspired for the 20th century like read books such as Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, Treasure Island, and Black Beauty.
The Victorians did usually put up a Christmas tree unless it was for royalty. They decorated it with paper chains that had been colored instead of ornaments. They called Santa the Yule elf. He wore a red cloak and had a long, white beard. Christmas was mostly a religious holiday. It was less about the wishes and commercial things and more about family and giving each other gifts and celebrating Jesus’s birthday.

The Christmas Carol is set in the Victorian Era, so the stuff that goes on in the Christmas Carol will be very similar to the things we read about. The Christmas holiday that the characters are celebrating will go by the same traditions that Victorian Era Christmas traditions go by. We will know why the people in the story are struggling the way they are and having the problems that they are having because we will know what social class they are.
