How Did Edgar Allan Poe's Life Affect His Writing
Edgar Allan Poe, was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston. He was a very talented writer, but wrote about sad and gruesome things, usually connecting to his personal life in many ways. Some things that connected with his personal life, and his writings, was the fact that there was so many women who died in his life, he was very poor, and didn't have a job for most of his life, and he had a case with alcoholism. He died on Sunday, October 7, 1849. The first thing that Poe’s life affected his writing, was the deaths of so many women he loved. Edgar Allan Poe saw women as angelic figures, and treated them with respect and courtesy. He never really knew his mother who died at the age of 24 from Tuberculosis when he was three. He grew up with John and Francis Allen who adopted Poe when he was orphaned. Edgar Allen Poe loved Francis Allen. She showed Edgar much affection, and he in turn was very fond of Francis. Francis Allen died of Tuberculosis. Poe was terribly affected by her death. Edgar Allan Poe married a girl named Virginia who was not yet 14. It started in college when he started gambling for money. He eventually was $2,000 in debt, and very much broke. Because of these money problems and financial difficulties, he enlisted in the army. Poe tried to make money off his stories which he published, but he never seemed to make that much. He had a few jobs from time to time but never for very long. Finally, the last thing that affected Poe’s writing, was the fact that he had a case in alcoholism. He went on terrible drinking episodes and had terrible depression. He would drink more than normal, when he lost someone or something. He would also drink to dull the reality of life. He would write about people with drinking problems symbolizing his alcoholism.     Edgar Allan Poe's work is known throughout the world. He was born in 1809 in Boston. When Poe was still an infant his father left him and then his mother died. Poe was adopted by Jon Allan. Then Edgar Allan Poe was Educated in Europe. Poe attendant college for while, but Jon Allan stopped Paying for his college education because Poe had to many gambling depts. When analyzing the short stories, readers will find these Similarities by considering the story elements: charters, setting, plot, mood, Subject of matter, and point of view. The characters in Poe's stories share similarities. Often a character is Driven by their emotions. In the Tell Tale Heart the unidentified narrator Becomes so obsessed with his emotions regarding the old man's eye that he Was driven to murder. In the Cask of Amontillado Montessori is totally Controlled by his overpowering feeling that he and his family name had been Insulted. In the Pit and the Pendulum the unknown narrator is being driven By his emotions to survive and to get out of the pit. It seems Poe's characters Are driven by their emotions. Another similarity a reader will notice is that usually male characters left Unidentified for example in The Pit and the Pendulum the entire story is Narrated by a man who is certainly unnamed, but is also vague regarding his Person.
