Man vs. Man is one of the many conflicts in the book “Night” written by the late Elie Wiesel. Wiesel expresses that it was him against the Nazi soldiers for they were ordered to beat the Jews and often times kill them. They were forced out of their homes and, “the Hungarian Police made them climb into the [cattle] cars, eighty persons in each one” (22). After going through many mentally damaging experiences, the Jews soon began to turn on each other. During transport, bystanders threw a piece of bread at the passing men, and an old man managed to snatch it. Everyone, including his son, jumped on him “when they withdrew, there were two dead bodies next to [Wiesel], the father and the son” (102). Later when Wiesel’s father was dying of dysentery,…

I believe that Eliezer lost faith because he didn’t believe he had anyone to believe in. He believed that if his lord was there for him, he wouldn’t be in the position he is in at the time. He would not be fighting for his life in concentration camps where he was being tortured. Other people were relying on their faith because they strongly believed they would get out of it if they pray often. I’m sure that in the end, if his father had not died he would still rely strongly on his faith. After his father died, he wasn’t relying on anyone but himself. He didn’t have to fight for anyone but himself. I believe that is why he didn’t strongly rely on his faith, because he no longer had faith in anyone but himself.…

Several deaths occurred on the journey to their destination in Auschwitz. Eliezer went through terrifying experience on board the cattle car. Upon reaching a town the bystanders would throw bread into the cattle cars and sit there and watch as the Jews would fight and kill each other over the piece of bread. When they arrived to the concentration camp, they were separated by strong from the weak. They were stripped from their clothes. If they had any gold in their teeth, they were sent to the area where they would have them removed. Then the troops tattooed numbers on the Jews as a constant reminder that the Germans owned them and as means of an identification…

After having witnessed the crimes that took place in Auschwitz, such as babies being thrown in the crematoria, Eliezer’s faith began to break, he seems to have lost all hope in god and life. “The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. When Eliezer is leaving his house in Sighet, he said, “I thought of nothing” (page 30). I can empathise with him at this point and understand, to some extent, what he is going through. I have moved around several times myself and each time, I did feel nothing. It was a sort of emptiness that, paradoxically, filled my body. I hadn’t yet fully realised that I would never go back.…
