F. Scott Fitzgerald changed American history forever. He wrote many writings, mostly novels, short stories, and essays. He is most famous for incorporating his own life into his own writings. He still is a major influence in the world today, although he was in the Jazz age. The Jazz age, Fitzgerald’s childhood, and his life influenced him to write his famous book, The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald).
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born into an Irish Catholic family on the twenty fourth of September in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was named after his cousin, Francis Scott Key, who wrote the United State's National Anthem. Fitzgerald’s father, Edward, was an old southerner from Maryland who tried his best to support his family with what little money he had. family to New York for a new job as a salesman at Procter and Gamble. He was soon fired from that job and moved back to F. Scott Fitzgerald's birth town (F. Scott Fitzgerald).
Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald did all they could to have F. Scott Fitzgerald grow up to have a good life. His parents sent him to a Catholic prep school expecting him to have a better education. Fitzgerald enrolled at Princeton University in 1913 once he graduated from the Catholic prep school. It was here, at Princeton University, where Fitzgerald first tried to apply himself in school (F. Scott Fitzgerald).
While at Princeton, Fitzgerald had low grades and in result of this, he left college in 1915. One year later, he returned but then he left one year later without a degree to join the army. While in the army, Fitzgerald was stationed in Alabama. Fitzgerald met a young woman in Alabama named Zelda Sayre. A few years after he and Zelda met, they got married. Fitzgerald left the army and published his first novel, This Side of Paradise ( Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald).
Almost instantaneously after his publication of This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald became famous. Fitzgerald and Zelda immediately became celebrities in New York and began living wild lifestyles. Fitzgerald kept writing short stories, novels, poems, and other literary works in order to support himself and his family (Benson, Sonia).
The Great Gatsby, one of Fitzgerald's most famous piece of work and was a first-person narrative, was published in 1925.
This modernist novel is based in the 1920s, where the first World War brought modernism to the forefront, which changed the morals of the country. The novel portrays how the American Dream is an illusion and throughout the novel, the characters lived dishonest and unfaithful lives in search of the American Dream. The main character, James Gatz, changed his name to Jay Gatsby in order to fulfil his dream of having a better life. He grew up poor and when he mysteriously gained wealth, he changed his name to Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby hosted many parties for the upper class people, including a woman name Daisy.
Jay was in love with Daisy, and she was with him, but she was married to a man named Tom. Many of the characters in the novel had multiple affairs with multiple characters. The characters did not care about each person’s consequences. The war was over and each person felt free. The characters just wanted to have excitement in his or her
lives.
Fitzgerald wrote this novel partially based on his own life. He enjoyed partying with the upper class. He incorporated parts of his life throughout the book. We can see this throughout many parts of the novel. In the novel, Jay Gatsby went to war. Fitzgerald was in the army. Both Gatsby and Fitzgerald were not rich as a children, but each made something out of themselves and became wealthy (Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald).
Fitzgerald continued to write many works of literature after his story, The Great Gatsby. Zelda had a history of mental breakdowns which continued throughout her life. In 1934, Zelda, Fitzgerald’s wife, was placed permanently in a sanitarium. When this happened, Fitzgerald became depressed and an alcoholic. He began spending all his money on booze and he did not care about his health (Benson, Sonia).
When Fitzgerald died in 1940, he was forgotten and unread by a great majority of the people. A decade later, many letters, stories, and notebooks of Fitzgerald were published. Thenceforward, Fitzgerald has been praised by many because of his style of writing and technique (Benson, Sonia).
