Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564. His Father Vincenzo Galilei was a famous musician at the time. His mother was Giulia degli Ammannati, she one of five children of a lumber merchant. Galileo was the first of six children: Michelagnolo, Giuliani, Virginia, Benedetto, Livia. His family was a part of the nobility in Italy. The Galilei’s moved to Florence in the early 1570’s.

He was improving on Lippershey's design. Hans Lippershey was a German-Dutch spectacle-maker. He was the first to design a telescope, even if it was on accident. Galileo improved his design by first to only eight times the human eye. But within a few year he started to make his own lenses and therefore improving the magnification of the telescope to ten times the human eye but had a very slim field of view. The new improvement on the telescope made it so he could make new discovery about the moon’s surface. The Moon has mountains, craters and other natural land masses.
