Galileo was born on February 16, 1564, the oldest of six children in his family. His father, Vincenzio Galeli, was a merchant and also a musician while his mother, Giulia was just a housewife like most wives during their time. He wanted to be a major part of the church which he would later be condemned from, twice. Galileo’s father didn’t see being a priest as a very stable job so he urged Galileo into attending medical school. Medical school wasn’t very much of a success either because it became too expensive for Galileo to afford. He ended up having to leave the university he was attending before earning his degree.
When I first think of Galileo I think of the telescope and his invention of it but he was actually not the first person to create it. The earliest signs of a telescope come from a lensmaker named Hans Lippershey in 1608. Yet, Galileo modified his design and was the first person to use a telescope to study the sky. Some of Galileo’s first discoveries were the moons of Jupiter and the earth’s moon. These are also the discoveries he is most famous for.
During his time, the idea that the sun was the center of the solar system and not the earth spread. This idea was also known as Capernicanism. Because of his research and great knowledge, Galileo decided to support this idea and the Catholic Church did not like that he did. The church taught the people that the earth was the center of the solar system so it didn’t please them when people were trying to prove them
