Another good example of Germany using military strategies to manipulate the Allies is when they staged the Phony War, which consisted of Allied soldiers and German soldiers essentially stared at each other with no German attack. While that was happening, a surprise attack on Denmark and Norway was put in motion and the Germans built bases along Danish and Norwegian coasts. As a result of this distraction, France fell to German troops after French soldiers were trapped on the coast at Dunkirk. The Nazi’s also wanted control of the Suez Canal and the oil in North Africa, and the Allied and Axis powers were in constant battle against each other for control the North Africa. Eventually, the Axis powers were pushed back enough for the Allies to take Tobruk. The Italians also wanted the Suez Canal, so they invaded Ethiopia through its colony, Somaliland, and had strong navy and airforce bases in Taranto, Sardinia, and Sicily. As a result, they now had control over 1 million miles of land and 150 million people. In April of 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea, which introduced new battle warfare with the use of aircraft carriers and planes to bomb opposing ships and the Battle of Midway saw the Allies attack Midway Island with planes to drop four bombs that destroyed 332 Japanese planes.
