How Did Greek And Romans Influence Today
Arthur Erickson said, “Roman civilization had achieved, within the bounds of its technology, relatively as great a mastery of time and space as we have achieved today.” Back in the B.C. time period the Ancient Greeks and Romans invented things with resources they had available. They invented arches, aqueducts and even invented the Olympic games, which are all things we use today. These things have influenced our society today making things easier than they really are. Instead of using the things they invented back then we have modernized them and made them our own.
One of the things the Ancient Greeks and Romans influenced today were the Olympic Games. “Everything started in the Peloponnese, in Greece, some 3,000 years ago.” The first written mention of the games dates back to 776 B.C. People in the games thought the gods were the people who decided the winner of the games. Nike, who was a winged female character, that flew down to the winner and gives them their reward that usually was a wreath or ribbon.
Another thing that influenced today’s society is architecture. The Romans created the arch, in which we changed to our own version of it. “Most arches consist of wedge-shaped blocks. The top center stone, called the keystone, is the last block to be inserted.” The Romans used a mixture of lime and volcanic sand to create cement like substance. Nowadays we use concrete to create blocks.
Because they didn’t have a solid base for their arches most cultures couldn’t create extravagant buildings with their version of the arches. Muslim architects created pointed, scalloped, and horseshoe arches which they used for mosques and palaces. Many cultures took the arches and changed them to benefit their
