It was because of the destruction of Asia Minor by the Turks in 1922. This destruction lead to an evacuation to the mainland. These refugees brought all their customs, cultures, way of living, and love for sport over to the mainland. A meeting between 19 finance ministers was put up on a Monday in May. They had the meeting and still failed to find a way to pay off the debt. They are hoping to find an agreement or plan by the next meeting on June 15. The EU will have to give out a fourth loan for Greece but they know that with this new loan they will never be able to pay off the debt.
The EU did agree back in 2015 to give Greece 86bn as a rescue package to save Greece from crashing out of the eurozone. This was their third loan to save Greece. There was a slight way out of this when the Greek government added extra pension cuts and increased its taxes. But there was conflict between some creditors.
