Whereas Mazzini was idealistic, Garibaldi was more realistic, which was one of the reasons he was more successful than Mazzini. Therefore, he recognized that creating a republic of Italy was very difficult and settled with the idea of an Italian monarchy with Piedmont as the ruler. In 1859, Piedmont declared war against Austria and when Garibaldi heard of the news, he helped fight by sending 1000 men to Sicily and Naples. “If March, 1861, does not find one million of Italians in arms, then alas for liberty, alas for the life of Italy... and with us every man of this land who is not a coward or a slave. Let all of us rally round the glorious hero of Palestro and give the last blow to the crumbling edifice of tyranny”. When he conquered them, they were in his hands so he decided to give them to Savoy, making a larger part of Italy under one kingdom. He greatly contributed to the Italian Risorgimento by spreading the news of Italian nationalism all over Europe.
