The word propaganda is often used in a negative sense, especially for politicians who make false claims to get elected or spread rumors to get their way. In fact, any campaign that is used to persuade can be called propaganda. War is a state of armed conflict between societies. It is generally characterized as extreme aggression, destruction, and usually high mortality. Adolf Hitler combined these two terms into one, and strategically did so in the psychological warfare of World War II. Hitler used propaganda in a handful of ways, and made a war weapon of it. He intended to dehumanize, maneuver, and to decept the nation in insidious ways, and propaganda was a main contributor. Influences worldwide were …show more content…
altered by Hitler's heavily thought out campaign. There are benefits and disadvantages to propaganda, both for the political party and the public. The use of propaganda in WWI intrigued Hitler and he saw that it is a main factor in persuading society. The Nazi's had no morals when it came spreading propaganda; there were no limits. During the time of World War II the governments of the battling nations used one of the biggest, most deceitful, and strategic war weapons, defined as propaganda.
Propaganda can be immensely powerful if used in several ways. Hitler new this and took advantage of this fact. A main accomplice to his propaganda was media. Although technology is not what it is today, it was beginning to mature, which Hitler for saw. Hitler used media to create fear, public panic and manipulation of the people. Hitler did not just tell people, and they believed him, he used psychological methods, procedures and had no limit on what or how factual his information was. Potential enemies such as France and Great Britain were told that Germany had no issue with the people of the country, but that their governments were trying to start a war with Germany. His plan was to turn people away from their country and side with the Nazi’s. Art was greatly appreciated and popular in Europe at the time of World War II, and could bring mental emotion and empathy to viewers, or the mass public. Nazi posters murals, and huge decorations on buildings were the norm of this era. Germany targeted enemy countries, connecting the land with rape, murder, violence, and lack of intelligence with the use of an abundance of posters found anywhere anytime in public locations. Propaganda was so accepted in the political aspect of war that Walt Disney developed propaganda films to target children. Such as Hitler coming to save the beautiful princess, who metaphorically was Germany. Even Donald Duck and iconic characters featured in the films. Every possible type of communication, technology or mass media was used if possible to directly target different age groups, races, and nations. In any disagreement or argument there is going to be a group or person that does not agree with what is being said. Hitler bullied and blamed the critics, to make anything they say invalid or caused a biased opinion to the people of the world.
There are three main types of propaganda.
The level of severity is measured by color, such as white, grey and black. Nazi’s practiced black propaganda like no other country before. Black propaganda is identified as being from one source, but is in fact from another. This is most common to disguise the true origins of the message. It was used to vilify, embarrass, or misrepresent the enemy, with deceitful lies and fabrications. Around 1929, Hitler hired a man named Josef Gobbels as his minister of propaganda. Minster Goebbels developed extremely successful campaigns using simple slogans and images repeated over and again in order to win public support for the party. The Nazis spent huge sums on newspapers, flyers and posters. Gobbels was responsible for the re-writing of school books and the production of anti-Semitic books, films and exhibitions. He arranged large political military rallies to build support. These were vast, highly organized events with banners and marching bands. Using his own skills of oratory Hitler attracted to the loyalty of the German people. A main aspect of black propaganda is it is exceedingly guarded, secretive and withdrawn from the public. Public knowledge of black propaganda tactics and sources would weaken or backfire the very campaign the propaganda is supporting. existed.
The effects of propaganda was greatly effective in many aspects of the war. When Hitler ascended to the office in January of 1933 one of the first things he did was eliminate the free press; by only allowing sympathetic newspapers, magazines, and literature to be published in Germany. As Germany and its army aimed for the Jewish nation, they used posters to portray Jewish people as non-humans with deformities. Due to Hitler’s and Goebbel’s beliefs, the Nazi party aimed to destroy Jews, people with abnormalities, their enemies, and anyone who didn’t fall under the criteria of the perfect race, the Aryan race. “The lifelike pictures, the powerful marches, the songs, the music, and the language are the expression of a new age which was molded by the boundless will to life of a nation united in National Socialism” (Hitler Won, pg. 225). Nazi’s and black propaganda were best friends.
Hitler came into power and did not waste a second of it.
Every move he made was well thought out and extremely strategic. The mass war weapon of propaganda made him who he was. The Nazis believed in propaganda as a vital too in achieving their goals. Hitler targeted audiences and did this in a psychological way. Hiring Gobbels as his minister for propaganda was very significant. With the two Nazi masterminds put together, the propaganda took over the world. World views, norms and values were changed. The few set of critical thinker whom rejected the Nazi beliefs, were either made to believe or assassinated. Propaganda can be exercised different ways in which include mentally and emotionally and the Nazi’s took great advantage of this. Goebbels had so much power in expressing of how important propaganda iwas to ensure that the people were won over or intimidated into accepting the Nazi
rule.
