Battleships had become very popular and a major fighting force in fleets. Japanese tactics were practiced on an island called Kyushu, having a similar layout to Pearl. The Japanese practiced bombing and flying undetected, because they were using new planes that they had to get used to. The Japanese prepared restlessly for this attack that was going to take place. The Japanese actually sent out a merchant ship to Hawaii (prior to the attack) to scout Pearl and pick up any citizens who wanted to come home during these conflicting times of nations. This ship made calculations and notes of the weather to ensure the safe arrival of the Japanese planes. They followed the exact route that the attack would, and they wanted to see how active Americans were with scouting areas. They had noticed one major factor, not one ship or vessel had been spotted. Japan was wondering where all the U.S. ships were ported. The U.S. was farther from knowing the truth then anyone had ever guessed, they knew of Japanese action but had no detail as to what they were doing. The Japanese fleet went quiet from there carriers and the U.S. thought it was because of “port replenishing”, but they could not have been any further from the truth. The United States was somewhat aware of a surprise attack from Japan but they never expected it to
