“Firstly, his mother died in June, followed a month later by his sister, then his father remarried in September and in November John was recruited into Parliament's army”(Christ Soldier). Bunyan served in the Parliament army because a civil war was taking place and he was drafted. Bunyan had been enlisted and served for a total of three years in the military. Bunyan wrote poetry from the time period of when he was in war that gave such vivid detail that the only way possible is if he experienced it for himself (Life of John).We can see that God was looking out for John when he was serving in the military. One day at battle a fellow soldier offered to take his place during an attack on a city in which performing his duties was shot and killed. Also, there was another story told of how John almost drowned out at sea.
After he got out of the army, John met a girl he had fallen in love with, and they got married around 1649. Unfortunately, no record of his marriage has yet been found, and no information was found on the background of the wife as well. “Under the influence of his first wife (whose name is not known) Bunyan began to read works of popular piety and to attend services regularly in Elstow Church”(Poetry Foundation).
