John was always open and honest with his words with a no-holds-barred vocabulary, but he would always speak with motivation and try to empower others. Good yet daring people like John are rare to come across. I don’t know any other man who would put others’ lives before their own. John noticed after he was banished that for once in his life he was alone but he wasn’t completely alone. His group to him, sad to say, were seen as somewhat useless and pathetic, he realized he needed to take responsibility and doesn’t abandon them. John was both of those things completely. Just about everyone in Poker Flat gambled. People here may act like they don’t and may act proper but we all know the truth. This became evident when they had thoughts about hanging John. The committee believed that hanging him was “a sure method of reimbursing themselves from his pockets of the sums he had won from them”. Those in that committee acted like they are saints and like John was the bad guy but in fact they were hypocrites. John was a heck of a gambler, so good that they wanted to run him out of town. Many in the West were seen as outcasts, John was one of the said many. Having a strong character and good morals in the West is key to establish a life here.
