On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was just signed. After five years of fighting, Germany had surrendered to the Allied Powers. Written in the treaty, Germany was supposed to take all blame for the war, pay all war reparations, limit their army to one hundred thousand men, and for Germany to give up its territories to the League of Nation. The treaty prevented Germany from ever rising up and it caused protests. Among the angered citizens was Adolf Hitler. Hitler had fought in World War 1 and was even at several significant battles. Unlike Hitler and Napoleon, Stalin gain power by force. After Vladimir Lenin died the race for power started for Stalin. Lenin’s successors were either Stalin or close comrade Leon Trotsky. Stalin eventually was able to gain power by forcing people into exile including Trotsky. Stalin never befitted the people of Russia but they were able to accept him because of the propaganda he put out. In most dictatorships, media and free speech is restricted or taken away. The propaganda was an effort to sway others that Stalin would lead them to a Utopian society. And they believed it. But it was mostly because if they spoke out against the government, they would be sent to gulags, or work camps. Stalin was so paranoid he'd arrest hundreds of civilians at an time and put them on unfair trial. People accepted Stalin mostly because of the brute force of power pushed upon
