Joseph Stalin, the unrivalled dictator of the Soviet Union, ruled from 1928 until his death in 1953. He came to power by a brand of totalitarianism that relied on widespread propaganda and a secret police force to eliminate opposition. He modernized the country through “Five Year Plans,” which consisted of forced collectivization and industrialization. Farmers were denied private property, and food was exported for foreign industrial technology. The resulting food shortages became a planned famine known as the “Holodomor” in the Ukraine, where farmers had actively opposed his attempts at collectivization. Despite Stalin’s harsh rule, the Soviet Union under his leadership became a world power and even acquired a brief technological lead in space exploration.…

Nikita Khrushchev became party leader after the death of Stalin in 1953, and rose above his opponents. Khrushchev distanced himself from his predecessor by presenting new policy reforms and denouncing the "cult of personality" that surrounded Stalin. This famous Secret speech was presented to the delegates of the 20th Party Congress on February 25, 1956 and accused Stalin of crimes and the use of terror as an instrument of policy. This effectively distanced Khrushchev from Stalin's close associates, Molotov, Malenkov, and Lazar Kaganovich and the more conservative elements of the Party. In 1958, Bulganin resigned making Khrushchev prime minister and later established himself as the undisputed leader of both state and party. He became Premier…

His biography has long been obscured by legends propagated by his fanatical cult of personality and the many monuments that he has forcibly made in his honor, but with the fall of the Soviet Union, more information regarding him has been revealed. Stalin’s rise to power originated from his central role in the Russian Civil War as the secretary general of the Bolsheviks, and after Vladimir Lenin’s death, he outmaneuvered his rival Leon Trotsky (who was exiled to Mexico and murdered in 1940) and eventually consolidated his power to where he was the central authority. An advocate of “socialism in one country”, Stalin focused inward…
