Twain wrote about Hannibal, Missouri were children stories. They were happy, fun, and full of mischief. One of Twain's most famous stories is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,it is a common childrens story. The narrator of our story is Huck Finn, he is very open-minded, and vulnerable. The young age of Huck and his companion Tom allows child like actions and silliness to take place. Because they are naieve, the story seems to be joyful, and humorus. At the beginning of this story, its starts out with a playful authors notice. The authors notice said, "Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot." The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn truly showed the light humor possesed by Twain in his early pieces of work. Twain also wrote stories that appealed to adults. It was also full of light humor. In "The Diaries of Adam and Eve" Twain truly captured the days of Adam and Eve with siliness and humor. Adam feels that Eve never shuts up, and feels she is often in the way. Adam refers to Eve as "It" saying, " I wish it would not talk. It is always talking. And this new sound is so close to me. It is right at my shoulder, right at my ear, first on one side and then on the other." It shows the difference between male and female. It shows that we annoy each other, but it is human nature. At the end of this story Adam and Eve both fess their love for eachother. Twain dedicated the book ot his wife Olivia after her death. It was a more mature story, but still humorus part of Twains career. A little later in his life, Twain experienced some financial difficulties.
He invested in a few things and lost money. To regain money Twain travelled the world giving lectures and charged people to come and listen to him. Twain wrote stories all through this time. But, Twain could not catch a break. From 1880-1909 Twains life was on a downward slope. Twain's wife and two of his daughters passed away, making it very hard on Twain. He bacame very cynical, and became very dark. Twain wrote "Letters From The Earth" which was published years after his death by his daughter. She didnt want to publish once he died in fear it would ruin his reputation. "Letters From The Earth" was very dark, and unlike any other story that Twain had written. Twain had many dark quotes about humans discriminating agianst one another. Twains remarks towards God seem atheist, its a very negative outlook on religion. One quote from "Letters From The Earth" is, "The difference between a Miracle and a Fact is exactly the difference between a mermaid and a seal.” This quote shows how Twain lost his uplifting, light sense of humor. Twain really lost all hope in society, and saw the world a lot different after the tragedy forced into his life. It was a change that made him a completely different writer from the beginning of his career until the
end. Pain changes people, sometimes for the better, other times for the worst. Twain's writing style changed completely. A story written from the beginning of his career is totally opposite than one written in the end. It was like Twain became a different author. Although his style changed, Twain is still one of the best American authors ever. Mark Twain went from humorus and happy, to stone cold. Twain will forever be remembered as one of the greatest writers in American history.
