Michael first began his criticism by writing in his own weekly newspaper, the Flint Voice. He would later be hired to write for the magazine, Mother Jones. The film had high ratings all around, but there were many different reactions to what Michael had created, which caused quite a bit of controversy. Regardless of what critics had to say, the film was voted Best Documentary by the NAtional Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. It was even declared as Best Film at the Toronto and Chicago film festivals. With such good reviews, Michael decided it would be a good idea to create his film studio, Dog Eat Dog Films, He also created an organization to deliver aid to social justice group as well as other fledgling filmmakers.
