I personally believe that it is very possible for our society today to get to this point and that we rely on technology so much now a days that we are starting to become robots to our devices.
My beginning statement began with the quote made by professor Faber on page 78, “Mr. Montag you are looking at a coward…….I did not speak and thus became guilty myself.” I chose to use this quote so that I could ask the question of is Faber really a coward? I also wanted to know why Faber didn’t stand up in the beginning when they first started burning the books. My question was not answered throughout the seminar but I think that other discussions within the seminar helped me to answer the question for
myself. During the middle section of the seminar I related back to Alex’s beginning question where he asked what happens when we lose the knowledge that we gain from the books. I replied to this question by stating that books hold a lot of important details that we would not get elsewhere. I continued on by saying that movies and television shows have limits to how long they normally are, whereas an author of a book has no limit to how much he or she wants to write. I said that now a days we are starting to skip over the little details when in fact the little details are what make the big picture. Going with that I stated that if a surgeon misses a step in a surgery it might only be one little detail, but it could risk the patient’s life. Later on in the seminar I related back to 1491 and said that if Mr. Henthorn did not make us read the article, then most of us would be utterly unaware of just how atrocious we were to the Native Americans. I said this because we were discussing how much involvement our government has in our everyday lives and in what we are taught to be true. In My closing statement I used the quote from page 223, “He forces an American living in cities…..no opinions, no philosophy, or sociology are allowed.” I used this quote in order to prove my argument that this book is still relevant today because our world even now is already a lot like the book. We also didn’t grow up fully relying on technology but the generations after us have. After our generation is dead and gone, what will happen to the world? The discussion became a debate in almost no time at all and after a while it became hard to voice your opinion with everyone talking over you. I think the main dominators of the debate were probably Candace, Abby, and I. For the next seminar I will try to keep things shorter and to the point so that others can talk and get there points in as well. Other than that I feel I did pretty well during this seminar and hope that my grade reflects so.
