Pi describes that after the sinking of the cargo ship occurred he found himself swimming in the Pacific Ocean. He was swimming toward the lifeboat. Four people survived Pi’s mother, the French cook, the sailor and Pi. The sailor had broken his leg when he jumped off the ship and into the lifeboat. The French cook stated “the blackness would spread and that we would survive if only his leg were amputated” (page 338). The cook cut the leg off while …show more content…
Pi and his mother were holding on to the sailor. The sailor was screaming, yelling and crying because he was in piercing pain.
When Pi was about to throw the leg overboard, the cook stopped him and he explained “Don’t be an idiot.
We’ll use it as bait. That was the whole point” (page 339). He told Pi that they were running out of food and this was the only way they could survive. When Pi’s mother figures out the reason for amputating the sailors leg she gets angry. Pi’s mother was furious that they cut off an innocent boy’s leg for fishing bait. The sailor died quietly and softly. The mother slaps the cook. A couple of days later Pi’s mother saw that the cook was eating the sailor. “I saw you! You animal! How could you? He’s human! He’s your own kind” (page 342). Pi’s mother was mad and disgusted. As days past they all started to talk a little and get along. The cook told the Patel’s that there was an island coming up, but he lied. When Pi and his mother took a rest, the cook stole their food. The cook killed Pi’s mother because Pi could not hold onto the turtle they were trying to catch for food. He hit Pi, Pi’s mother hit him, he hit her back and they started to fight. “My mother was fighting an adult man. He was mean and muscular. He caught her by the wrist and twisted it… The knife appeared. He raised it in the air. It came down” (page 343). The cook stabbed Pi’s mother multiple times and she
died.
The cook provided food to Pi after killing his mother, but Pi never forgave him. Pi and the cook started to fight and Pi killed him. Pi stabbed the cook in the stomach repeatedly. He stabbed him in the throat as well. “His blood soothed my chapped hands” (page 345). Pi ate the cook; he explains “It tasted delicious, far better than turtle. I ate his liver. I cut off great pieces of his flesh” (page 345). Pi descends into a level of savagery which he never imagined. Pi says that the man was evil but the only thing that was worse than that was that Pi found evil within himself. After that Pi turned to God and that is why he survived.
