How Did Pi Survive
On February 14th 1978, a teenage boy named Piscine Molitor Patel was found at the coast of Mexico. He survived 227 days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Pi and his family were moving from India to Canada. While they were on their way the Japanese ship named Tsimtsum sank due to engine failures.
Pi describes that after the sinking of the cargo ship occurred he found himself swimming in the Pacific Ocean. He was swimming toward the lifeboat. Four people survived Pi’s mother, the French cook, the sailor and Pi. The sailor had broken his leg when he jumped off the ship and into the lifeboat. The French cook stated “the blackness would spread and that we would survive if only his leg were amputated” (page 338). The cook cut the leg off while

We’ll use it as bait. That was the whole point” (page 339). He told Pi that they were running out of food and this was the only way they could survive. When Pi’s mother figures out the reason for amputating the sailors leg she gets angry. Pi’s mother was furious that they cut off an innocent boy’s leg for fishing bait. The sailor died quietly and softly. The mother slaps the cook. A couple of days later Pi’s mother saw that the cook was eating the sailor. “I saw you! You animal! How could you? He’s human! He’s your own kind” (page 342). Pi’s mother was mad and disgusted. As days past they all started to talk a little and get along. The cook told the Patel’s that there was an island coming up, but he lied. When Pi and his mother took a rest, the cook stole their food. The cook killed Pi’s mother because Pi could not hold onto the turtle they were trying to catch for food. He hit Pi, Pi’s mother hit him, he hit her back and they started to fight. “My mother was fighting an adult man. He was mean and muscular. He caught her by the wrist and twisted it… The knife appeared. He raised it in the air. It came down” (page 343). The cook stabbed Pi’s mother multiple times and she

Throughout this scene, there is a common thread of this idea. It first becomes apparent as Pi’s eyesight diminishes and he is blinded. He completely gives up, forfeiting his life and his will to live. As he often does throughout the story, Pi turns to his faith when he is in this time of need. He decides to “leave matters in the hands of God” (242). He does not allow himself to be driven mad because his faith is able to ground him. On the other hand, he gives up his life. He desperately wants his suffering to end so he becomes willing to pay the ultimate price. Driven by the pain of not having the necessary rations of food and water to live, Pi feels as though he should give up. His religion has taught Pi how sacred life is so for Pi this is the most extreme form of desperation.…

I thought that this best fit into the plot of the story because imagine what it would’ve been like to be Pi, to manage surviving out of a sinking ship and knowing that all your family members have died in the ship as it sunk deep into the ocean and being stuck in a lifeboat with wild animals not knowing if or when they’re going to eat you. It must have been a…

His faith is tested as an adolescent when his father is forced to give up the family zoo, where Pi realises he's been as much a captive as the animals themselves. A Japanese freighter becomes a temporary ark on which the Patel family take the animals to be sold in Canada. But it's struck by a storm as dramatic as anything ever put on the screen, and Pi becomes a combination of Noah, Crusoe, Prospero and Job. Alone above the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Pacific, he's an orphan captaining a lifeboat with only a zebra, a hyena, a female orang-utan and the gigantic Bengal tiger Richard Parker for company.…

She got back up and began to tear at him and seemed to be in a larger rage than before. He was getting weak, but still had too much pride to give up. She threw him down and grabbed a knife. She put her weight on his body. Standing on his back she tried to put an old, rusty, crusted, bloody blade through his back, but the mail shirt once again protected him.…

While he was in the lifeboat, he used praying for a couple of things. He used it to pass the time, but it also was used by him to keep his faith restored, and help him get through this really rough time in his life. He often prayed whenever something would go wrong, but at the same time he would just pray to pass some time, and talk to god. The last thing that occurred on the lifeboat that could have affected his mindset is his realization that his family was really gone. He started to understand this heart-wrenching fact in chapter 49, when he starts to decide to look through the rations of the lifeboat. His realization that they are dead causes him to have a decrease in hope of being found and he kicks into survival mode and doesn’t focus on being found but just staying alive. Pi was on the lifeboat for a very long time. 227 days to be exact. In that amount of time, many people tend to lose their sense of communication with others. It is typically highly unlikely that people can just come back into the normal world. However, when Pi returned, he was fully functioning, and was able to come back and do interviews, and later have a wife, children, and pets. That is pretty amazing when you think about it. Lastly, Pi is seen as the protagonist in the entire duration of the story That can prove that he had great determination and will to live because he came out a hero. He did a lot of really great things whilst on the…

Regarding the opinion of pi developing an even stronger personality, evidences are obvious. The survival fully proves that Pi kept wisdom and logic under such terrible condition. Being with the fiercest animals and floating on the ocean for 227 days, most people can not suffer the mental pressure, and collapse even before they get to land. People are defeated by loneliness, desperation and mental disorder caused by physical illness. Pi is not one of them. Base on the fact that he not only survived but also is able to tell and remember the whole experience, it is unquestionable that Pi went through the hardship with an active and positive attitude. He himself even claimed that “with time and experience, I became a better hunter. I grew bolder and more agile. I developed an instinct, a feel, for what to do. (Chapter66)” In addition, Pi thought about helping others in the future, while his own destiny was still a mystery. In Chapter 71, he provided nine advices for those who should ever be in the same circumstance as he did. It suggests that Pi was sober enough to even consider contributing back to the society in the future. Although Pi underwent miseries and adversity, he overcame all the challenges and developed a stronger personality to face the life…

They had roughly three cans of food that they were going to eat over a period of time. Sadly one of the men couldn’t fight the urge and ate them overnight. They had to start searching for food. They caught a fish after trying, and trying. They thought they would have no problem eating the raw fish because they were starving, they thought wrong. They were trying to force it down their throats or they would starve. Pi had tons of cans of food. Plenty to save him for a long time. Yet after it was gone, he also had to start searching for food. He caught fish no problem, but he felt remorse after killing it. He felt bad. You’d think you would be overjoyed after catching food that could very well save your life. Yet I believe one of the worst parts of Life of Pi was when Pi said, “On the day when I estimated it was Mother’s birthday, I sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her out loud” (Martel 264)…
