Spain has produced some of the world-class painters. Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso exist among the ranks of Spain’s most internationally acclaimed artist. These two influential artists use their artwork as a platform to protest against social injustices. Goya and Picasso, works can be understood to address Social Protest Art, but artist handles the subject in their own unique way. Goya and Picasso were both prolific artists of their times, offering works of great visual travesty of the glories of warfare and bloody victory.…
When doing portraiture artists tend to exaggerate colour and tones to get across the feelings in a picture or to exaggerate the importance of something or someone in a picture. I have chosen to compare and contrast the work of two portraits, first of all I will talk about ‘weeping woman’ by Pablo Picasso and I will secondly talk about ‘Woman with a veil’ but Raphael Sanzio.…
In this painting, Picasso forgot all known form and depictions of classic art. He used distortion of a women's form and geometric forms in an new way, which challenged the idealized representations of female beauty that was expected in paintings. It also shows the influence of African art on…

Political activism has been an essential part of Pablo Picasso’s life. Picasso was a member of the French communist party until his death in 1973, therefore he acted as a public figure as well as an artist. He created art that reveals a truth about the world and humanity, in order to liberate the oppressed. His art could care less about portraying exact replicas of ornamental beauty, because he thought it was a distraction from achieving justice.…

Pablo Picasso was a renowned 20th century Spanish artist. One of his most famous works, Guernica, was created to be the centerpiece for the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World's Fair. This painting is a powerful political statement and expresses without words the devastation of war. Picasso’s inspiration was the 1937 bombing of Guernica, Spain by the Nazi’s. Guernica depicts the horrific consequences of war and how effected those involved are, especially the innocents. Though the painting received poor reviews from the Germans and Soviets, a German fair guide stated that the painting was "a hodgepodge of body parts that any four-year-old could have painted…” I find it to be extremely meaningful. Guernica is a symbolic representation of the ruin…
For centuries artists have moved audiences through the use of pictures. As time progressed those images became more and more demanding of the viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo Picasso's Guernica, created in 1937, is a great example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically packed artworks. Gericault's The Raft of the Medusa and Picasso's Guernica are both horrifying accounts of the nature of men that aimed to alter a viewer's political perception…
Cubist painter Diego Rivera had become a great success at this time in Europe, but the happenings in the world at the time would strongly change his work style. With the inspiration of political ideals in the Mexican Revolution (1914-15) and the Russian Revolution (1917), Diego Rivera had a mission to make art that reflected the lives of the working class as well as the native peoples of Mexico. Rivera soon developed an interest in designing murals during a trip to Italy. He found inspiration in the Renaissance frescos that were in Italy that he saw during his trip…
Pablo Picasso, who was born in Malaga, Spain, changed and created new style of painting while moving from a place to another. He went throng his blue period, in which he used different shades of blue to paint, during his three trips to Paris. After he settled down in Paris finally in 1904, he met Fernande Oliver and started changing his style of art from dull blue to light color like red and pink. He then kept changing his mood of works when he moved back to Gosol, Spain and created works influenced by not only Spanish style of art, but Greek, Iberian, and African art.one of the factors that caused the traditional norms of art, music, literature to be transformed was the merging of arts amid different regions and cultures.…

In 1940, they resided in California, which is the birth place of “Visage de la Guerre,” translated to “Face Of War.” Quoted from the article “The Face of War ,“ “the miserable face of the corpse - the visage of war - sees only death, speaks only death, and reflected in his eyes are the corpses whose eyes and mouths are also filled with death” (theartistsalvadordali.com). Thousands of lives were lost during the three year period war. Before my research and reading the passage next to Dali’s painting, I honestly believed that the image was another one of his lucid dreams. Understanding the history of the Spanish Civil War, I was able to approach the painting differently with a broader perspective of what Dali was…
“Guernica” is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. It was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937. The painting itself measures 11ftx 26.5ft. “Guernica” depicts the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica during the Spanish civil war. The whole thing is done in a cubist style not surprising since Picasso is known for his cubism. In the painting there are people and animals alike all of them in pain and or suffering. “Guernica” is also filled with symbolism that Picasso incorporated into it, and hidden messages. The painting is also colorless it only uses black, white and, gray.…
On December 8, 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico, Diego Rivera was born. His passion for art emerged early on, so at the age of 10 he attended San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City. Years later he traveled to Europe to further his studies, where he befriended many famous artists of his day. As time went on Rivera’s style began to change, because of the events that began taking place. Inspired by the political ideals of the Mexican Revolution (1914-15) and the Russian Revolution (1917), Rivera wanted to make art that reflected the lives of the working class and native peoples of Mexico. He became fascinated in painting murals, finding his muse from the Renaissance frescos in Italy. When he returned to Mexico, the government gave him funding…
