Henry sponsored the ship sailed by Nuno Tristao, who was on an expedition to explore the African coast. Henry had sponsored this ship for a couple reasons, as a hope to find rumored christian allies, and geographic knowledge. While in Africa Nuno came across a market run by black muslims(pbs.org). The portugues crew under command of Nuno, captured twelve of these Africans. Nuno planned to take them back to Henry, not as slaves but more as a device to understand the culture of the Africans so Henry could learn more about them. One of these twelve was a tribe leader in Africa and in return for he and a boy's safe return back to Africa, he would give the Portuguese a supply of Africans for slaves. Just like that the Portuguese within the next ten years had thousands of slaves out of Africa, from the deal made by the African chief.
