How Did Puritan Americans Fight For Freedom And Liberty
Freedom and liberty are some of the major reasons why many people came over from England a long time ago. For many people arriving to the new world was scary because they did not know the land. Over time, many more people started to arrive and a nation started to development. Some groups of people gained freedom and liberty as time at on. However, some groups gained some freedom and liberty but not same equality as the white men had. Women in history have been fighting for their liberty ever since they arrived in America.
Many women arrived on a ship with their husbands to the new world. The early women settlers had some liberty in the churches. Puritans came to America from religious prosecution. Nursing was a major field where many women went into. Women brought a nourishing role to the battlefield. Middle-class women who were nurse had to overcome prejudice because they were not used to this kind of activity. Women also had work as a clerical worker during the Civil War. Nursing and clerical work were the first avenues for middle-class women as an alternative to marriage and motherhood. These professions also provide an income and opportunities to widowed women. However, these professions had a disadvantage of low prestige and low pay. Voluntary Organizations was an acceptable form of activity for white middle-class women. Thousands of women during the war participate and organize what was known as “Sanitary Fairs”. These fairs women made homemade goods were sold to contribute to the war. These volunteer work gave women a sense of purpose and a political sphere to support the war effort. When the war ended these women still continues to be an avenue for the married white middle class to engage
