Impact of Saddam Hussein
In 2006, one of the most famous dictators in the world, Saddam Hussein, had left his country in shambles. Throughout his long rule as the President of Iraq, he mistreated and murdered his own kind. Saddam Hussein developed many enemies throughout his reign and engaged in conflict that left Iraq ruined. He was also a Sunni that was running a country that also had Kurds and Shiites living in it, whom he discriminated. Saddam Hussein had a negative impact on Iraq because he committed crimes against the human rights of his people, engaged in conflict that he could not win, and because he divided his country’s religious groups.

Saddam Hussein made many enemies throughout his reign of terror, and ended up in some conflicts. He lost two major wars, the Iran-Iraq War and the Persian-Gulf War. In 1980, Hussein sent an airstrike on the country of Iran, sparking an eight year war, the Iran-Iraq War, that ended in a stalemate. About 250,000 - 500,000 Iraqis died on the battlefield. The country of Iraq was also in a large sum of debt. In 1990, Saddam invaded Kuwait in attempt to pay off debts from the Iraq-Iran War. Sooner or later, a coalition of 39 countries fought back against the Iraqi army. The war ended in a stalemate and over 100,000 Iraqi soldiers died. Saddam Hussein also got engaged in conflict with the United Nations and the United states of America. During the Persian Gulf War, Saddam Hussein had gotten the United Nations involved in the war by not showing them his weapons like he was supposed to. Sanctions were imposed by the United Nations, which blocked off trade with the the country of Iraq. In January, 1991, Operation Desert Storm began and airstrikes were dropped on Iraq for over a month. Warfare continued for a little over another month until Saddam Hussein agreed to a ceasefire and the war ended in a stalemate.
