The role of the U.S. in this operation was the defense of Saudi Arabia under Operation Desert Shield. The United States deployed around 500,000 American troops to deter the Iraqi forces from attacking Saudi Arabia. They requested the support of the United Nations (U.N.) to form a coalition to fight Hussein’s forces.
