Many sayings we use today were invented by Shakespeare. Some sayings you may possibly use, even daily, could be by Shakespeare such as; “in a pickle”, “with bated breath”, “a heart of gold”, “the world’s mine oyster”, “fair play”, and “a wild goose chase” (Anderson). These are a few examples of the many sayings he had created within his years. Also, simple words we use daily could possibly have been invented by Shakespeare. For example, if you use the words: gossip, bedazzled, gloomy, or even grovel you would be using some of the many words he has contributed to our language (Anderson). Many of the words he had created were by merging pre-existing words from many different languages. Shakespeare also may have had his own dictionary, that he wrote words he had created in. Overall, Shakespeare had invented around 2,000 words (Anderson). Without many of the words and sayings, he created, our vocabulary would be very different. Much of the words we say now are from him. Without Shakespeare, grammar and rules of English would not have been standardized. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century, Shakespeare’s works became very popular, and this helped the grammar and rules of English move toward the standardization process. With this, many of the Shakespearean words and phrases were put into the English language (‘William Shakespeare’s contributions”). Without Shakespeare, English would be less expressive and colorful. A big part of why William Shakespeare was so popular, is due to the fact he wrote for the people. Meaning, he wanted the ideas of his plays to be relatable to his audience, and much of them were. A generous amount of his plays were understood by the common people of his time as well. Most plays before Shakespeare were just for the wealthy and the educated. After Shakespeare, plays were watched by many varies of people (“Influence on Theatre”). His characters in his plays were very realistic, and they were not static. The characters withstand change throughout their story in the plays (“Shakespeare's Contribution to World Literature”) . Due to the fact Shakespeare was born into the Renaissance, his plays were based on humanist ideas. Shakespeare had much faith in man, and he disliked injustice. He was also most known for having drama based plays. Due to this, most of the history's English
