Today, pop culture shapes America and other countries alike. Influencers of pop culture include actors, musicians, and politicians, mostly from those who are still living. However, many others have shaped our modern culture, even from days long past. One of them, William Shakespeare, is one of the most famous playwrights of all time. Today, many of his phrases are used commonly, without a thought given to the creator of them. While barely known for creating words, Shakespeare is credited for inventing over 1700 words. Shakespeare is probably most well known for his plays. He wrote most of his literary works from between 1589 and 1613, over 400 years ago. However, this long period of time does nothing to diminish his plays use in schools and as pleasure reading for scholars. In total, Shakespeare wrote almost forty plays. His plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth, many of which people commonly reenact in school, community, and professional theaters. The phrase 'in a pickle,' for example, is so well known people neglect to realize Shakespeare created it. Along with that expression, he created other phrases such as going on 'a wild goose chase' or having "A heart of gold." He even conceived the knock-knock joke in "A Midsummer Night's Dream"! As well as creating phrases most would not assume Shakespeare had made, there are phrases for which he is famous. From Hamlet, "To be or not to be: that is the question" is one of the most famed phrases ever, and even has movies named after it.
