The movement for Sierra Leone’ independence came in the form of after World War Two. Sierra Leone during this time achieved independence. It was declared in 1961,and was meet with positivity and negativity from its people. However, that dosen’t means that there wasn’t problems with achieving their nationhood. Sir Milton Margai, however was a leading force in the independence , from the British. However, Sir Milton Margai was born on December 7, 1985, and was the son of a prominent businessman. He was educated at the Evangelical United Brethren, for his primary school years, he then went to Albert Academy High School, and then later at Fourah Bay College, where he got his B.A. from, and then finally at Durham University. Like most people in that were from the colonies, he went to Britain where he got his Masters in medicine at King’s college, he then graduated in 1926 . Margai although was a Pro-British supporter, he believed that independence from Britain would provide Sierra Leone with a better economy and government . Sir Milton Margai and his friend Siaka Stevens created the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), which would end up winning seats as the chief minister. He then form another movement with his brother, the People's National Party. In 1960, after meetings between Margai and the British Colonial Secretary, he then secured independence for Sierra Leone . He then later became Sierra Leone’s first Prime minister, “Sir Milton Margai, he was Mende and he was democratically elected with support of his ethnic group and Krio elites” . In Sierra Leone after independence was declared, a parliament style legislature was created . Also, there have been several military styled governments since Sierra Leone declared independence
