soil” term had double meaning for this new land regarding slavery. The northerners wanted to migrate west to work. Their position called for barring slavery from the new territory so they did not have to compete with the southerners free black labor. The Southerners felt the idea of barring slavery from the Mexico territory was in violation of their equal rights. To combat the constant rising issue of slavery, established party leaders attempted to fix the differences between them. Since California wanted to be admitted into the Union as a free state Senator Henry Clay came up with a plan with four main provisions which came to be known as the Compromise of 1850. The south was not happy with this compromise at all, and there was even talk of disunion. Southern leaders were being accused of holding California hostage to their own legislative aims. However, Taylor died suddenly and his successor helped secure the adoption of the Compromise of 1850.
Over the next decade the North and the south debated over the land causing several different laws to be passed. The Kansas-Nebraska Act became law but shattered the unity of the democratic party. The rise of the republican party and the North became a complex integrated economy. Republicans, declared there was opportunity to move up in status of landowning farmer or craftsman. Free labor could flourish and slavery was condemned by them.
In June 1858, Lincoln accepted his nomination for Senate for he believed a house divided could not stand and did not want a half slave and half free. He believed Americans must choose between favoring or opposing slavery. However, Douglas had a policy of popular sovereignty. Through error of an updated count of Illinois Douglas won the vote and became Senator. This did not prevent Lincoln from being elected president in 1860 causing white southerners to believe they are at the mercy of a hostile party to their region's interests. This caused seven pro slave states to secede from the union.
The seven states formed a confederacy, adopted a constitution, and even chose their own president.
Their new federal constitution ensured them of their rights to own slaves. Lincoln rejected the Crittenden Compromise. Lincoln also rejected the right of secession but he denied any intention of interfering with the slavery in those states. The Confederates president ordered batteries to fire on Fort Sumter. Lincoln then ordered 75,000 troops and the war began. There were several factors that allowed the north to win the Civil War, One of the main reasons is that the north had far more soldiers and resources than the south. Then on the Proclamation's provisions, the blacks were allowed enrollment into the military which added even more men to the Northerners side.
The industrialized economy also helped support the troops with supplies, ammunition, guns, and food. The mills worked all day and night to supply the army. This helped the economy in the north boom. The south did not have these resources or machinery to help during this
time.
