He, willingly, encountered many love affairs with countless women because he felt that those wrongdoings, according to the Lord, would give him a sense of pleasure to not only himself, but to the people he surrounded himself with. Augustine had troubles of understanding the difference between physical love and spiritual love that satisfies both the heart and soul. As Augustine's fight against lust became more difficult, “[He] was no love of marriage, but a slave of lust.” (Confessions, 17) The selfish mind of Augustine found lust, or physical love to be the foundation to a life full of completeness: He loved to be loved. However, during that time period of his life, God’s everlasting presence dawned on Augustine’s sinful nature, and waited until Augustine looked for the Lord’s guidance. “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6) All alternatives in which we seek due to the selfish nature to complete the heart of our soul will eventually drive us so far away from the Lord, it will lead to death. But, those who fix their eyes on the Lord out of
