In the early months of 1810, the British government began to conceive of a plan to rescue the king of Spain from Valençay. A Baron Kolli was chosen for the task because of his knowledge of French and France as well as his great discretion. The plan was for him to gain access to the chateau under the guise of a member of staff and, after convincing Fernando of his authenticity by means of letters provided him by the King of England, escort him to safety.
King George III of England and Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, were aware of the plot and Kolli was invited to Apsley House to dine with Wellington and discuss the plan. It was arranged that two vessels, the Implacable and the Disdainful, together with a brig and a schooner, would form the rescue squadron that would wait for Fernando and Kolli on the coast . Everything was provided to make the ships fit for the transport of a king and they were provided with the best plate, linen and books as well as ornaments for a Catholic service and a Catholic priest to officiate
