How Did The British Government Survive The Rescue Of Fernando VII?
From the very beginning of his exile, plans were being proposed and made for the rescue of Fernando VII. The first incidences occurred before the King had even arrived at Bayonne. Ayerbe records that people suggested escape attempts to the king at places they stopped on their journey to Valençay, including at Bordeaux . The second, as noted above, occurred no sooner had the king arrived at Valençay, when ladies under the guise of visiting Talleyrand suggested to the King’s companion Ayerbe that the king attempt an escape. In the early months of 1810, the British government began to conceive of a plan to rescue the king of Spain from Valençay. A Baron Kolli was chosen for the task because of his knowledge of French and France as well as his great discretion. The plan was for him to gain access to the chateau under the guise of a member of staff and, after convincing Fernando of his authenticity by means of letters provided him by the King of England, escort him to safety.
King George III of England and Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, were aware of the plot and Kolli was invited to Apsley House to dine with Wellington and discuss the plan. It was arranged that two vessels, the Implacable and the Disdainful, together with a brig and a schooner, would form the rescue squadron that would wait for Fernando and Kolli on the coast . Everything was provided to make the ships fit for the transport of a king and they were provided with the best plate, linen and books as well as ornaments for a Catholic service and a Catholic priest to officiate

I had only the Bonhomme Richard, Ia Pallas, and Ia Vengeance with which to execute this great project. But I knew that to strike a brilliant blow it was not always necessary to have a great force. I convinced the captains of la Pallas and the small corvette, by holding out the prospect of large profits to them. I was sure that in case of failure I could still, at least, make a very advantageous diversion in behalf of the enterprise of the Count d'Orvilliers in the channel. I distributed red uniforms to my marines, and I placed a few men dressed in them on the two prizes so that the two ships looked like…

Starting with the Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the Americas in the late 15th century, European powers sought to explore, colonize, and find valuable resources within the New World. This source, a letter, was written in 1519 in the city of Tascalteca by the Conquistador Hernan Cortes to the Spanish King Charles IV. At first it seems unusual that he would be writing to the king as his expedition was called off; Cortes is practically writing to his superiors about how he is defying orders given to him.
