The number of short lived and inconsistent emperors was the start of the overall downfall of rome. The mad emperor Commodus sparked the downfall of it all. Their Military spending was through the roof because they spent so much money trying to defend their empire. Rome was down on men so they had to spend more money on weaponry so they could protect themselves from outside attacks from their enemies . The people taxes went up which caused people to be consistently taxed. If landowners could not pay their taxes they would sell themselves into slavery.
