In Putting America Back to Work, they compare then to now and for both past and present life they say, “...the purpose was to address a depressed society…” (Putting America Back To Work). For those ten years, it was normal to be able to refer to our society as depressed, sad, or even suffering.
In today’s society, to be able to tell who had been through the depression is easy. Many people who lived through the depression will find themselves saving everything, money, food, or personal belongings. Ever since they got their stuff back, or worked for it, they have not wanted to let go. Those people will rarely get rid of anything, because of the losses throughout the depression. Many people do not think about the long term effects of short term problems.
The reason why some people could not afford even the essentials of living is because of the depression, so men would stand on the streets and sell fruits such as apples to supply for themselves and their families. The people’s changes in behavior was ever changing as well as their income. From the streets, to the banks, “...the impact of this severest and longest depression upon daily life could be observed everywhere” (A History of American Life). Even today the effects of the Great Depression can still be shown whether it be by actions that physically show or books that verbally
