The Great War, or First World War as it is commonly known, was a global war that started in Europe and was fought from 28 July 1914 till 11 November 1918. The Great War caused massive loss of life, and was responsible for significant social and economic changes. The war on the Western Front, fought between the French, Germans, British and later Americans, was where most of the fighting took place. The Western Front was a warfare of attrition , and resulted in a long and tiresome stalemate, as German and Allied forces struggled to efficiently get supplies to the front line. The primary reason for the United States entry into the Great War in April, 1917, was apparently because President Woodrow Wilson had become ‘frustrated at Germany’s resumption of submarine attacks on passenger and merchant ships in the Atlantic’ and the Germans ‘continued attempts’ of forming an alliance against the United States with Mexico. America, according to Michael Kazin had a significant contribution to the war effort on the Western Front and ‘at last the war was a global conflict.’ It is easily argued that the War was already a global conflict as many nations in the Pacific, such as Japan and Australia, and Europe were already engaged in conflict or being affected by it.
