Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in southern United States.
They were executed in south of America in the 1880s with the objective of increasing racial segregation. The execution of the racial segregation of the African Americans led to the loss and abuse of their civil liberties. The laws affected the everyday lives of the blacks, mandating segregation of schools, parks, buses, trains, water fountain and restaurants. “Whites Only” and “Colored Only” signs were put up as a remainder of the racial law. Another way the government discriminated against the blacks was by using giving literacy test. The literacy test, was from 1890s to the 1960s, refers to state government practices of administering test to potential voters deliberately to test their literacy in order to vote. The era of Jim Crow and the literacy test transformed United States. The lives of many blacks were lost at the hands of the whites even if there was reason for them to
lose their lives. The Jim Crow and the literacy test ensure that the whites worked endlessly to segregate and discriminate the blacks from enjoying the America life by all means . On the other hand, laws provided an opportunity for the blacks to show that they can fight for their own rights and that their race should not be used in any way to discriminate them. Racial discrimination against african American is still happening today, it only has lessened. Today we still have police brutality but blacks are not asked to use separate facilities.
Another group of people who had to fight for a better freedom were women. Throughout history women have had fewer legal rights than men. Their main responsibilities were being a wife and mother. They were denied the right to vote and the right to go to school. Before 1920, women were not given the right to vote. Only men could! This was because most people believed that women were less intelligent when it came to making a political decision. The campaign for women's votes did not happen in the United States until the mid 19th century, however, many people opposed it, women as well as men. Some women thought that politics was not a suitable for women, the idea of 'seperate spheres' was very popular at that time, and that a woman should devote herself to home and family was very widespread. Women finally got the right to vote when the 19th amendment, granted them the right to vote, this is known as the women sufferage..
