America was facing several problems. The British military had more power than the American army. Since the American army was reduced as a cost-cutting measure, it needed to be expanded again. However, raising the funds for the war was delayed because there was no longer a national bank. Even though Americans won the occasional victory at sea, they could not effectively defend all of their seaports at the same time. With the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, the time was right for the British to retaliate against the Americans actions in Canada. The British were finally able to give their full attention to the war against the United States. The Battle of New Orleans was the last, and arguably the most famous battle fought in the War of 1812. The battle happened when the war was almost over. The Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war, was signed on December 24,1814 but not actually authorized by the American Government until February 1815. The British had attacked New Orleans on January 8,1815.
