In the year of 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set of on an expedition to explore the new the west territory from the Mississippi River to Present day Oregon. They braved dangerous waters and harsh weather and endured hunger, illness, injury, and fatigue. Along the way, Lewis kept a detailed journal and collected samples of plants and animals he encountered. Lewis and his expedition received assistance in their mission from many of the native peoples they met during their journey westward. During this time of there expedition they met one of the most well known natives Sacagawea. Sacagawea helps Lewis and Clark negotiate with the Native Americans for vital necessities and supplies like food. Once they reach the Pacific Ocean they decide to return to Washington D.C. Once reaching the nation’s capital, Lewis received payment for his courageous efforts. Along with his salary and 1,600 acres of land, he was named governor of the Louisiana Territory.
