He had an older brother that died at birth but had the same name, Vincent Van Gogh. His father was a pastor and Van Gogh was supposed to carry on in his father’s footsteps. Many people today think the world would have been robbed of his talent and artwork if he would have been a pastor. Van Gogh was unaware of his talents until he was twenty seven years old. He painted his first painting at this time and was mostly self taught from there on out. Van Gogh only painted dark and sad paintings at first but eventually discovered other topics. Painting himself was his favorite thing to do. He painted over thirty self portraits between 1886 and 1889. While he was in a mental hospital he produced his most famous artwork, Starry Night. You can still see this painting at the New York Museum of Modern Art today. Vincent Van Gogh was extremely prolific. He produced his most famous paintings in the ten years right before he passed away. During that time he made roughly about nine hundred paintings that are now considered some of the most famous paintings of all time. While Van Gogh was alive he had only sold one painting, The Red Vineyard. He only ever became famous after his death. Everyone knows Vincent Van Gogh died under mysterious circumstances. He was a regular guy set out to follow the footsteps of his father. He decided to take his own path and discovered art. I can relate to Van Gogh and the reasons why he created art in some ways. I am not going to be a famous artist one day, but I did step out of my comfort zone and began to discover art. Art is a way I can relieve stress and just relax by letting my emotions flow into my artwork. I believe that Vincent Van Gogh had a major impact on the art world. He lived almost one hundred and thirty years ago and his artwork still affects the lives of new artists today. People all over learn from his style of art. It affects the way people view beauty in art and individuality. His artworks have been copied many times but have never once been duplicated. This proves to us that each piece of work someone completes is unique and their own. His life has sparked creativity and excitement in the art world today. If you think about it, people today still try to mimic his style of art that was created over one hundred years ago and that is simply amazing. Vincent Van Gogh’s work is important to the study of art in so many ways. He not only was a great artist but he is looked at as a great teacher as well. Many people learn from the style of art he used. If he decided to follow his father’s footsteps instead of creating art, we would all be missing out on all the wonderful things he had done.
