Elections occur due to the thought during the enlightenment period that people should have the right to choose who they see fit to run the country. Society is given this freedom which often brings out the worse behaviors during and after the elections. People become aggressive in supporting their candidates and issues but this support can translate to increased aggression towards the opposing. The frustrations, provocation, and reciprocation in an election can cause increase of aggression with candidates and voters. Even media is a big factor in society’s increased aggression during elections. The media can dehumanize candidates and influence voters negatively by provoking campaigns, publishing scandals and lies, and promoting and encouraging negative ads and ideas of candidates not appealing to their network or company.
Social psychologist would define aggression as purposeful behavior causing physical or psychological harm towards someone (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2013). This can commonly occur during elections. For example, immigrants have a constant frustration in what will happen to them and their families.
