How Do Romeo And Juliet Conform To Society
It is evident through the story of Romeo and Juliet, that the characters were unable to fulfill external requirements and needs, while also pursuing love with each other. Through Romeo, Juliet, and Lord/Lady Capulet, we can see the sacrifice that must be made. Romeo does not conform several times throughout the story. Firstly, after a street brawl at a public gas station in Verona by the Montagues and Capulets, the Prince makes a rule that there will be no street fights, and the next one would result in people being killed. Romeo had a personal desire for Tybalt because his friend Mercutio was killed by Tybalt. In this example, he was unable to fulfill the societal want of no fighting, for his own desire, and this led to his banishment from …show more content…
Montagues and Capulets had a longstanding feud with each other, and Juliet was supposed to have an arranged marriage (majority of marriages worked this way at the time). However, Romeo went against the societal standard, and married Juliet in secret; this fulfilled his desire of love for Juliet, but further demonstrated his struggle to conform to the societal standard of arranged marriages and Montagues not being with Capulets. Juliet also struggles to conform to society several times in the play. Firstly, Juliet defies her father, who wants Juliet to marry Paris. Lord Capulet says he will disown her and let her die on the streets if she does not marry Paris. Juliet undertakes numerous actions to prevent this marriage to Paris. She says no to her father, but eventually when she agrees to the marriage, she secretly takes a potion that will put her to sleep for 42 hours and fake her death to avoid the marriage. Then, when she wakes up, she kills herself because she would rather die with Romeo than marry Paris. This demonstrates how she was unable to conform to her father’s needs because of her desire/love for Romeo, and how she struggled to avoid her father’s wants at all …show more content…
Another example of a character who struggles between conforming and satisfying personal desires is Friar Laurence. Firstly, Friar Laurence defies societal norms by agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet secretly. As a friar, he is expected to follow the rules and regulations of the church which usually require marriages to be conducted publicly and with parental consent. However, Friar Laurence follows his personal desire of helping the young couple keep their marriage private (this is what they requested), and also having a possibility of ending the Montague/Capulet feud. Additionally, Friar Laurence makes a plan that involves deception and manipulation by having Juliet take a potion to put her asleep for 42 hours, so she can fake her death and then escape to live with Romeo. He struggles to conform and be honest with society about the situation, and instead fulfills his personal desire of keeping the couple happy and together. Other examples of characters fulfilling personal desires rather than conforming is when Mercutio and Tybalt put their fighting wants and hate ahead of the no-fighting rule; this leads to them getting into

In Romeo and Juliet, this statement is proven right. As the characters make decisions based on emotion, many literary elements are intertwined by William Shakespeare. Conflict is not only a literary element but also is a theme that is used throughout the whole playwright. For example, the passion of hate causes the Capulets and Montagues to constantly fight and feud. This External conflict interferes with Romeo and Juliet 's love and causes them not to tell their parents about their marriage. They have to constantly meet in secret and them not being able to see each other causes more major conflicts. For example, they feel so deeply for each other that they feel that they cannot live without the other. These strong emotions lead to many misunderstandings and eventually the death of the two "star crossed lovers". If Romeo and Juliet were thinking within reason, they would have told their parents about their love and possibly may not have committed suicide. The death of Mercutio also causes problems between the characters. When Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo feels vengeance and anger towards Tybalt. If Romeo would have been thinking realistically, he would have told Prince Escalus about the killing and Tybalt would have gotten in trouble. Instead, Romeo makes a rash decision and kills Tybalt and later faces the consequence; being banished from Verona.…

Capulet, dishearten about the recent death of Tybalt, reschedules and plans the wedding of the County Paris in order to bring happiness rather than woe for Juliet, “O' Thursday let it be.—O' Thursday, tell her…” (Shakespeare 3.4.22-25). Capulet not only created rash decisions for his own benefit (social status, security, and economic state) and forces marriage on to Juliet, but has complicated Romeo and Juliet’s plan to be together. Juliet revokes this arranged marriage and is overwhelmed by the advancement that her parents have created. Capulet, being the head of household has patriarchal power making it harder for Juliet’s opinion to be valid. He uses force and power showing that he is selfish and prone to rage, “Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!... An you be mine, I’ll give you to my friend.” (Shakespeare 3.5.160-167,177-196). Juliet begs to cancel the marriage but he being a misogynist, revokes her opinion, and in hope to know what is best for her. He continues to use verbal abuse to prove his point and treats her as a piece of property instead of a human being. The lack of proper communication and contentment presented proves how challenging it is for Juliet to reveal to her parents that she is loyal and married to Romeo and that her opinion is valid, gives her further reason to be disobedient. Her parents fail to acknowledge that this is a new step in her life due to being with a different guardian, and the overwhelming amount of misinterpreted emotions that she is experiencing, such as her parents believing that she is only crying for the death Tybalt, but for the exile of Romeo…

Lord and Lady Capulet believed in the idea of arranged marriage, that it was a good thing for their daughter. La. Capulet was blind to Juliet’s feelings and emotions, and only wanted what she and her husband wanted, which was for Juliet to be married to the county, Paris. If Lady Capulet had been more of a motherly figure, and had listened to her daughters needs, had been more caring, and had done the simple things a mother should have done, Juliet wouldn’t have wanted to drink the potion that got the ball rolling in the first place. Lord Capulet wasn’t any better and had a defect of character. He had narrow vision, and thought that if Juliet were to marry Paris, that her grief from Tybalt passing would pass. Lord Capulet forced Juliet’s hand. He had told her, “I tell what: get thee to church o’ Thursday, or…

Friar laurence also made immature choices as well. He agreed to marry the two and also made a plan that in the end killed them. “ Take thou this vial, being then in bed and this distilled liquor drink thou off” (pg. 255). Here the friar tells Juliet to drink a poison that won’t kill her but make her sleep for two days. He does this so she can fake her death and be with Romeo. The Friar also made the decision to marry Romeo and Juliet in the beginning of the play. “ I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancer to pure love” (pg. 217). This is where things started going bad for the two. The friar could have denied Romeo when he asked for him to marry…

A simple decision can prove more fatal than death. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, characters have evidently not solved their conflicts very wisely because their decisions are based on their impassivity. One of the main characters in particular, Romeo Montague, seems to rely on his impulsiveness to resolve his conflicts. Throughout the play, Romeo makes very hasty decisions, which result in unnecessary negative consequences. Three conflicts that Romeo solves recklessly are: his struggle with love; the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues; and the forcefulness of love. To start, Romeo’s struggle with love is introduced.…

Romeo was enraged by the death of his friend, and proceeded to lose his temper and kill Tybalt, who was the man that killed his friend. Tybalt’s death got Romeo banished, for the Prince of Verona did not condone killing, even for the purpose of revenge, “You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgement.” (Matthew 5:21). Juliet was willing to die for Romeo, for the purpose of being a loyal wife, “I will do it without fear or doubt, To live an unstained wife to my sweet Romeo.” (4.1.85-90). Romeo and Juliet did eventually die for each other, which was devastating for those who had watched their tragic tale. Although dying for one another is a bit drastic for modern love, their are still sacrifices and pain in each…
